Medicare Fraud Prevention Week

Did you know that Medicare loses an estimated $60 billion each year due to fraud, errors, and abuse? Some common examples of fraud, errors, or abuse could include:

  • Charging for services or supplies that were not provided

  • Misrepresenting a diagnosis, a person’s identity, the service provided, or other facts to justify payment

  • Prescribing or providing excessive or unnecessary tests and services

I was blown away by the sheer scale of Medicare fraud, and the impact it has on victim’s lives. This week, I’ll share more stories on medicare fraud to help you and your loved ones stay safe. But first, let’s focus on Medicare Fraud Prevention Week.

A quick background on Medicare Fraud Prevention Week (MFPC) to help you understand the resources you have at your disposal. MFPC was started two years ago by the Administration for Community Living and the Senior Medical Patrol. With offices in all 50 states, the Senior Medicare Patrol provides free, unbiased one-on-one assistance.

Here are the key resources to keep handy:

  • Learn how to read your MSN by watching, How to Read Your Medicare Summary Notice. You can also call your SMP or go to their website to learn how to best protect yourself and your loved ones.

  • When reviewing your MSN or EOB, look for services, products, or equipment you didn’t receive, double charges, or items your doctor didn’t order.

  • Use this SMP Office Locator to call or email your local SMP if you believe that you have experienced Medicare fraud, errors, or abuse.
